A group of Welsh families from the town of Carmarthenshire and a community in Wales, lying on the River set sail for Philadelphia in 1697/8. March 7, 1697/8, an agreement was entered into between Owen Thomas, of the County burrough of Carmathen, mercer, owner of the good ship called the “William Galley, “now riding in the River of Towy, of the one part, and David Powell, of the parish of Nantmell, in the county of Radnor,, and John Morris, of the parish of Karbadamfyneth, in the said county of Radnor, yeomen, of the other part.”
The agreement was that Owen Thomas, owner of the said ship, and Samuel Haines, master thereof, for a voyage or passage to Philadelphia. That the ship would from the River of Towy, with the first and next good wind and weather on May 10th, for the port of Philadelphia with the passengers listed below.
“And it is further covenanted and granted between the said parties, that the said David Powell and John Morris as well for themselves as also for all others the passengers hereunto subscribed, do hereby promise and engage to pay for themselves and all other passengers from 12 years of ago and upwards unto the said said Thomas, the sum of five pounds.”
“In witness whereof, both the sd. Parties have hereunto their hands and seals iuterchaugeably sett the day and year first signed and delivered in the sight and presence of us. David Williams and Thomas Osburne.”
